The Spirit Dwelling series is based on the Antelope Slot Canyon, Lake Powell, near Page, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation. The Navajos believe that spirits dwell in the slot canyons: sacred ground. The rock formations have swirling patterns created by the flow of wind and water through time shaping the graceful sandstone. As I painted the series, I realized that this place was sacred to me. The only light source in the canyon is directly overhead and farthest away from the eye. Its as if the pure light of the sun can drive away those dark moments of the soul.
